Employer Outreach Volunteer Responsibilities

The Unit Employer Support Representative is responsible for the liaison and grassroots development of the Mission One Program within the assigned National Guard and/or Reserve units.  To help ensure this is accomplished, your job is to:

  1. Make initial contact.

  2. Unless you are already familiar with the unit and its leaders, we suggest you send a letter of introduction before a personal visit.
  3. Develop a visitation schedule for all of your assigned National Guard and Reserve units.
  4.  Request sufficient quantities of ESGR fact sheets and brochures for pending unit visits from your Mission One Coordinator.
  5. Conduct an initial visit with the Unit’s key leaders.
  6. You’ll want to speak with the Commander, or in the Commander’s absence, his or her representative.  The initial visit should be short and to the point.  Refer to the current ESGR Operational Guidelines.  Use the Unit Visitation Procedures Overview at TAB 4 as a guide. Ultimately you want to address the entire organization.
  7. Post the Mission One Poster (ESGR Form 10 or 11) in an appropriate location at the National Guard or Reserve training facility.
  8. Present the Mission One Briefing to Unit members.
  9. Your actual presentation depends on a number of factors (i.e. allotted time, audiovisual support, location, number of Reservists, etc).  You must weigh these factors when deciding upon the type and style of presentation.   Be sure the content includes an overview of ESGR programs, USERRA, and a point of contact for assistance.  Sample briefings are available in the current ESGR Operations Guide (pages 9-8 through 9-11) and in the narrative support section of the new Mission One Video Kit.  An enhanced briefing for use with an overhead projector is available at TAB 5.
  10. Distribute ESGR Fact sheets and Brochures.
  11. Ensure each Reservist has ready access to ESGR fact sheets and brochures at the conclusion of your briefing.  Ask the Unit Leadership to display additional copies in a central location for future reference.
  12. Obtain Feedback from those you brief.
  13. It is always a good idea to assess your work.  Candid feedback from your audience will assist you in ascertaining your briefing strengths and weaknesses.  Additionally, as time passes, this feedback will help you to identify more closely the specific needs of each unit.  An ESGR Briefing Feedback form is enclosed at TAB 7.
  14. Update the National Guard and Reserve Unit listing.
  15. Update the ESGR Mission One Coordinator on any changes to your assigned units.  This includes the point of contact, telephone number, unit designation, and mailing address.
  16. Use and forward Unit Visitation Report in a timely manner.
  17. After a unit visit, use the report format at TAB 6 to report the outcome to the ESGR Mission One Coordinator and National Staff.
  18. Remember you are the primary point of contact for your assigned Units.
  19. As such you will provide assistance and information on many topics including the Ombudsman Program.  It is extremely important that you understand the basic tenets of USERRA and the Ombudsman Program. TAB 10 is a more detailed overview of the Ombudsman Program and USERRA.
  20. ESGR Awards Presentations.  Coordinate with the unit for inclusion in the ESGR “My Boss is a Patriot” or “Pro Patria” awards presentations.  This will serve as an excellent opportunity for increasing your visibility within the unit.
